At the end of a multi-day backpack in the Denali National Park backcountry, we walked several miles down the Savage River Valley along the river bar out to the park road. Along the length of the valley, a line of tall willows grew and supported several large messy magpie nests. Each nest was protected by a magpie pair who commented loudly as we walked by. I constructed this “carousel” type book to show just how complex the willows were and how persistent the magpies were.

Each fall thousands of sandhill cranes fly south from their Arctic tundra nesting grounds to wintering places in California, Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. In the spring they reverse their course, going back north to nest again. The journey is primeval–thousands of birds flying in groups over mountains, rivers, and fields in all kinds of weather.

Climate change has increased the average annual temperature in many places. Higher temperatures in combination with reduced rainfall stresses many species of trees making them prey to bark beetles. Bark beetle infestations inevitably weaken and often kill their host species. In Alaskan spruce forests the spruce bark beetle is the culprit; in Southern California it is the pine bark beetle–same outcome, slightly different species…devastation.

Wonder is a paper memory of many canoe trips in the high Arctic. I have been a rock collector all my life, attracted to shapes, colors, and patterns. Every trip ends with a bag of rocks and several hundred photos of rocks too big to drag home.

Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) infestations of poplar species in Alaska are very visible along roads and trails, turning whole groves of trees silver-green in color. A Year in the Leaf follows their annual life cycle.

A murmuration is when thousands of starlings fly together in a coordinated, shape-shifting manner across the sky. I love the images of birds flying, but wanted them to be colorful, reflecting joy.
