Almost anything can spark a series…radio segments, articles, conversations with friends, breathtaking places. My process is spontaneous, with a question of “What if?” usually being the point of departure.

Created in response to On Distant Hills composed by Brent Lawrence during Composing in the Wilderness, 2017 residency. I belong to the Elements Artist Group. DENALI Artists Respond to Music Inspired by Wilderness was conceived at the confluence of two languages - music and visual art. Elements Artist Group, six artists anchored in Alaska, created eighteen pieces of art in collaboration with nine composers from Composing in the Wilderness 2017.

Each piece of art is a personal response to a musical composition. Each artist responded to three pieces of music, generating eighteen works of art - two responses to each of the nine musical compositions.

Legacy is a love letter to my mother in law. The pages are made from her damask table napkins. The cookie recipes printed on the pages are from her handwritten recipe cards. The name of the person she got the recipe from is in the upper right corner. The covers were molded out of paper mache using the waffle baker she used throughout her married life.

Climate change has increased the average annual temperature in many places. Higher temperatures in combination with reduced rainfall stresses many species of trees making them prey to bark beetles. Bark beetle infestations inevitably weaken and often kill their host species. In Alaskan spruce forests the spruce bark beetle is the culprit; in Southern California it is the pine bark beetle…same outcome, slightly different species…devastation.
