Art Quilts
I have been creating textile-based artwork for over 30 years, exploring a variety of visual forms. I dye and print the majority of the fabrics I use, often producing small pieces of cotton fabric in unusual, experimental patterns and color combinations with no particular direction in mind.

Statement: I am fascinated by the microscopic. The images in this series are constructed as if looking through a microscope eye piece. Sometimes the microbes are real and sometimes I make them up. The Covid 19 virus is both deadly and beautiful. It needed to be in the series.

Statement: The more things change the more they stay the same. I made this quilt in 2007 in response to the shootings on the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University campus on April 16, 2007 where 32 students and teachers died. By 2017 (the most recent statistics) nearly 40,000 people have died from gun related injuries, not by international terrorists, by home grown individuals who could legally buy guns from simple hand guns to easily modified semi-automatic weapons. The public interpretation of the second amendment has morphed over recent years to reject even modest background checks or licensing.

Statement: In early Rome, images of the two-faced god Janus adorned gates, doorways and arches. Why two faces? He is the god of both beginnings and transitions. One face looks back at the past, the other into the future. Here, the mirror is the viewer, and the six faces on each die depict consequences of misusing resources, including heedless extraction of oil, gas and minerals without looking forward to the consequences for the future of the planet.

Statement: 2020 has been a cataclysmic year, and it ‘s not over: worldwide pandemic, American election year, social upheaval because of police homicides and brutality toward people of color, school instability and economic meltdown due to the pandemic and bad leadership. I decided to reflect on all these issues in the roll of one die. There is no face of peace or comfort. Every roll is craps. We must learn to play a different game.

NOW AND WHEN
Collaboration with Ree Nancarrow for In A Time of Change: Trophic Cascades exhibition (2013), Fairbanks, Alaska.
Quilted boxes; hand dyed and Spoonflower printed cotton, polyester thread, foam core, upholstery pins
In 2012-13, Ree Nancarrow and I were selected to participate as a collaborative team in In A Time of Change – Trophic Cascades, a project of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, which offered opportunities for artists to work with scientists in a variety of research subjects for a year.
The project culminated in an exhibition that traveled to various Alaska venues. Participating in the project influenced how I look at animals, plants and the ecosystems of which they are a part.
The web of relationships among predators, herbivores and the plants that sustain them interest me. I like to understand a scientific basis for the beauty and curiosity I experience
